Root Canal Therapy
Your Experts in Endodontics
Root canal treatments have a bad reputation. They are often feared by patients. However, if done correctly by an experienced dentist it should be no more uncomfortable than any other treatment. Root canal treatment can decrease pain and improve your oral health. Our dentists may recommend this endodontic therapy if you have an infected tooth. This treatment can prevent further damage and ultimately save your tooth. And when in the safe and gentle hands of our Ed Square Dental team, you have nothing to worry about.
When Root Canal Treatment May Be Needed
A root canal treatment is necessary when the innermost layer of your tooth, the pulp, has become infected. Infection often occurs as a result of prolonged and ignored tooth decay. If the infection is left untreated, an abscess may form and you could eventually even lose your tooth. The purpose of this treatment is to remove the infected pulp and reduce the risk of further infection. In some cases, a crown may be placed on top of your tooth to restore its structure, function and aesthetic.
Some signs that you may need root canal treatment include:
- Severe pain when chewing
- Sensitivity to hot and cold beverages that is long-lasting
- Darkening of the tooth
- Swollen and sore gums
- Visible holes or decay on the tooth
- Swelling in your face or neck
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is recommended that you speak to your dentist immediately. The quicker you can catch the problem the better.
When Root Canal Treatment May Be Needed
A root canal infection is usually diagnosed with testing and X-rays. Your dentist can then confirm the issue requires root canal treatment.
The treatment is done in 3 stages:
This is the first clean which is done to limit bacterial infection. The area is numbed, a rubber dam and clamp are placed around the tooth. This acts as a barrier to keep the tooth dry. Your dentist will make a small opening at the top of the tooth. They then use small files to clean out the canal. The tooth is rinsed with antibacterial solution and a temporary filling is put on top.
This step will either be performed on the same day as stage 1 or a few weeks later. Again, this is another cleaning step, but it will be more thorough than the initial one. This is done to ensure all bacteria is eliminated and to prevent reinfection. We will take more X-rays at this stage to confirm the tooth is clean of infection.
The final step. We rinse the tooth with an antibacterial solution and dry it. Rubber points are then placed in the root canal to fill it. These points are sealed via heat. Depending on the case either a temporary or permanent cap will be placed on top.
Your root canal treatment is now complete.
Root Canal Treatment Recovery and Care
If root canal treatment is performed properly it should be no more uncomfortable than a filling. You may feel some discomfort and swelling after the initial step, but this should subside within 24 to 48 hours. You should feel little to no discomfort during the last 2 stages as the nerves would have been removed.
