Children's Dentistry in Edmondson Park

Good dental habits start here
The dental experiences your child has now will shape how they feel about their teeth for the rest of their life.

What is children's dentistry and why does It start so early?

Children’s dentistry covers the full spectrum of dental care for babies, toddlers, children, and teenagers.

It is not just about treating problems, it is about preventing them. Regular dental visits from an early age allow us to monitor your child’s dental development, catch small issues before they become big ones, and teach children the habits that protect their teeth for life.

It is also about building a relationship. A child who feels safe and comfortable at the dentist is a child who will keep coming and that matters enormously for their long-term oral health.

Good dental habits now, a lifetime of healthier smiles

The habits and attitudes your child develops toward dental care in their early years follow them into adulthood.

Children who attend regular check-ups are more likely to maintain that routine as adults. Children who learn proper brushing and flossing technique early carry those skills for life.

And children who have positive dental experiences are far less likely to develop dental anxiety, one of the most common reasons adults avoid the dentist.

Baby teeth matter
More than most parents realise

It is easy to think of baby teeth as temporary, they fall out eventually, so why does it matter if they get a cavity?

Here is why it matters a great deal.

They Hold Space for Permanent Teeth

Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for the adult teeth developing beneath them. A baby tooth lost too early, to decay or infection, can cause neighbouring teeth to drift into the gap, crowding out the adult tooth and leading to alignment problems.

They Are Essential for Speech and Chewing

Children use their baby teeth to chew food properly and to form sounds correctly. Missing or severely decayed baby teeth can affect nutrition, speech development, and a child’s confidence in social situations.

They Teach Dental Habits

How a child relates to their teeth in early childhood sets the pattern for adulthood. A child who sees their baby teeth as worth caring for becomes an adult who cares for their permanent ones.

When should your child have their first dental visit?

We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit around their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first.

This first visit is simple and relaxed. We introduce your child to the dental environment, do a gentle examination, check that teeth and gums are developing normally, and talk with you about diet, cleaning, and what to expect as more teeth come through.

Starting early removes the fear of the unknown. A child who has visited the dentist since infancy is rarely anxious about it.

SIGNS YOU SHOULD COME SOONER

  • You notice dark spots, white patches, or visible holes in your child’s teeth
  • Your child complains of tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Your child has had a knock or injury to the mouth or teeth
  • You are concerned about the position or spacing of your child’s teeth
  • Your child is over 12 months and has not yet seen a dentist

What regular children's dental
visits actually do

Decay Caught Before It Hurts

Children often cannot articulate dental pain, and decay in baby teeth can progress quickly. Regular check-ups catch problems early - a small filling now instead of a painful extraction later.

Protective Treatments Applied

Fissure sealants fill the deep grooves in back teeth where decay most commonly starts. Professional fluoride treatments strengthen enamel. Both are simple, quick, and highly effective preventive measures.

Healthy Habits Reinforced

Each visit reinforces brushing and flossing technique, dietary advice, and the importance of oral care. Children who understand why they care for their teeth are more motivated to actually do it.

How often should your child see the dentist?

Most children benefit from a dental check-up every six months.

Children’s teeth are more susceptible to decay than adult teeth, and decay can progress quickly in young mouths. Regular six-monthly visits allow us to monitor development, apply preventive treatments, and catch problems early.

Some children with a higher decay risk may benefit from more frequent visits. We will advise you on the right schedule for your child at their appointment.

What happens at your child's dental appointment

Here is what a typical children’s dental visit at Ed Square Dental looks like – from arrival to leaving.

A Relaxed Welcome

We take a few minutes to let your child look around, ask questions, and get comfortable. We introduce ourselves and the equipment in a friendly, non-threatening way. There is no rush.

A Gentle Examination

We check all teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development using child-friendly language throughout. We show your child what we are doing and involve them in the process where appropriate.

Scale and Clean

A gentle professional clean removes plaque and calculus buildup from teeth and along the gum line. We work at your child's pace and make the experience as comfortable as possible.

X-Rays When Needed

For a more complete picture of your child's dental development, we may take digital X-rays. They are quick, safe, and help us catch any concerns that are not visible to the naked eye.

Preventive Treatments

Where indicated, we apply fluoride varnish and fissure sealants. Both are quick, painless, and highly effective at protecting children's teeth between visits.

A Chat with You

Before you leave, we talk you through the findings, answer your questions, and give you practical advice on brushing, diet, and what to watch for before the next visit.

How to make your child's first dental visit a positive experience

The way you frame the dentist at home has a powerful influence on how your child feels about going. A few simple things make a real difference.

PARENT TIPS

  • Talk about the dentist positively: avoid phrases like “it won’t hurt” (which plants the idea of pain) or “be brave” (which implies there is something to be afraid of)
  • Read children’s books about the dentist before the visit, several are available that frame the experience as exciting and positive
  • Avoid scheduling appointments when your child is tired or hungry, a well-rested, fed child is far more cooperative
  • Let your child bring a favourite toy or comforter for the waiting room and during the appointment
  • Praise and celebrate the visit afterwards, make it a positive memory with a reward or activity your child enjoys
  • Never use the dentist as a threat or punishment, this creates fear that is very difficult to undo

Frequently Asked Questions

Around their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. This first visit is gentle, brief, and designed to introduce your child to the dental environment in a positive way.

Yes – in most cases. Decayed baby teeth cause pain, can become infected, and if lost too early, allow neighbouring teeth to drift and block the adult tooth beneath. Treating decay in baby teeth protects your child’s health and the alignment of their permanent teeth.

Every six months for most children. Some with higher decay risk may benefit from more frequent visits. We will advise you on the right schedule at your child’s appointment.

We work with anxious children regularly and take a calm, patient approach. We never rush or force anything. Please mention your child’s anxiety when you book – we will allow extra time and work entirely at your child’s pace from the very first appointment.

Yes – fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay. Professional fluoride treatment at appropriate doses is safe, effective, and recommended by dental and paediatric health organisations. Our team will discuss the right fluoride approach for your child’s age and needs.

As soon as two teeth are touching side by side – usually around age two to three. At this point, a toothbrush cannot reach between the teeth and flossing becomes important. We will show you the best technique for your child’s age at your appointment.

Yes – modern digital dental X-rays use a very small amount of radiation. We only take X-rays when clinically indicated and use lead protective aprons as standard. The benefit of detecting problems not visible to the naked eye far outweighs the minimal risk.

No – we welcome all children regardless of health cover. Eligible children may also be able to access the Australian Government’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which provides up to $1,026 in dental benefits over two calendar years. Ask our team about eligibility when you book.
